Iowa weather: Severe storms early Thursday morning
POWER ACROSS THE STATE YESTERDAY. WE’LL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THAT THIS MORNING. AND WHAT HAPPENS TODAY AS NEW STORMS ROLL IN. I KNOW JOHN HAS TALKED ABOUT THREATS OF WINDS, YOU KNOW, POWER OUTAGES AND THINGS AS WELL. WE COULD SEE ABSOLUTELY, AS THESE STORMS SWEEP OVER RIGHT NOW, IT DOES SEEM TO FAVOR THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE STATE AREAS SOUTH OF I-80, REALLY SEEING THE HIGHEST THREAT. WE’LL SEE HOW THESE SPREAD AS WE GET DEEPER INTO THIS MORNING. THEY ARE JUST NOW MOVING INTO THE STATE OF IOWA. SATELLITE AND RADAR SHOWING THIS. WE HAVE SOME PATCHY LIGHT SHOWERS, ISOLATED STORMS IN CENTRAL IOWA RIGHT NOW. BUT THE THE BIG STRONGER STORMS ARE WELL OFF TO THE WEST STILL. AND THEY’RE MAKING THEIR WAY EASTWARD RIGHT NOW. JUST SOME PATCHY ISOLATED SHOWERS AND STORMS AGAIN, JUST AROUND AMES, GOING FARTHER EAST ALONG HIGHWAY 30, EAST TOWARDS MARSHALLTOWN. YOU’LL SEE MORE OF THOSE SHOWERS AND ISOLATED STORMS, BUT IT’S THE STRONGER ONES TAKING AWAY THE LIGHTNING AND JUST SEEING THESE VERY HIGH RETURNS, THOSE SHADES OF PURPLE, THAT’S WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO, OF COURSE, HAVE HEAVY RAIN. ALSO CAN HAVE SOME LARGE HAIL WITH THESE AS THESE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNED AREAS CONTINUE TO PUSH THEIR WAY EASTWARD. WE’RE SEEING SOME NEW ONES AS WE SPEAK. BUT PUTTING A TRACKER ON THIS, THEY ARE MOVING VERY QUICKLY, AROUND 60 TO 70MPH EASTWARD. SO PUTTING A TRACKER WITH THOSE SPEEDS ON THEIR CLARINDA AROUND 505 IS WHEN THEY’LL BE PUSHING OVER YOU CORNING CLOSER TO AROUND 525, EVEN GOING TO BEDFORD AROUND. 521 SO THAT’S GOING TO BE AGAIN FOR THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE STATE. THIS IS STILL EXPECTED AS FAR AS THESE HIGH RESOLUTION MODELS, THE LATEST ONES THAT HAVE BEEN REFRESHING TO STILL MAKE ITS WAY ALONG I-80. NOW THAT IS STILL HASN’T HAVE YET TO BE SEEN, BUT THAT IS STILL A POSSIBILITY AS WE GO DEEPER INTO THE MORNING, EXPECTED TO BE CLOSER TO OVER THE METRO AROUND SEVEN, POSSIBLY HOLDING OFF UNTIL AROUND 8:00. BUT STILL, IT’S RIGHT AROUND THAT RUSH HOUR TIME. PEOPLE HEADING OFF TO WORK, GETTING OUT, STARTING OFF YOUR SUMMER DAY PLANS. THIS IS GOING TO LEAD TO A LOT OF BUMPS IN THAT ROAD FOR YOU. AS WE TALK ABOUT HEAVY RAIN, LARGE HAIL, STILL A POSSIBILITY WITH THESE STRONG WIND GUSTS. CAN’T RULE OUT RIGHT NOW AS FAR AS ANY POSSIBILITY OF TORNADOES, THAT IS GOING TO BE MORE ON THE ISOLATED SIDE, BUT IT IS STILL A POSSIBILITY AS THESE THINGS PUSH FARTHER EAST. THAT POSSIBILITY DOES CLIMB. BUT OVERALL, GOING TO 10:00 EVEN TO AROUND NOON, STILL SOME ISOLATED STRONGER STORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY AREAS NOW NORTH OF I-80 WHERE WE’RE NOT GOING TO BE EXPECTING TO SEE TOO MUCH OF THIS ACTIVITY THROUGHOUT THIS MORNING. AND THEN FOR THE AFTERNOON, STILL A LOT AS FAR AS EAST OF I-35. NOW THAT’S GOING TO BE THE FOCUS FOR THOSE STRONGER STORMS TO REDEVELOP FOR PARTS OF THE AFTERNOON. BUT THINGS REALLY CALMING DOWN TO THE EVENING AND OVERNIGHT. NOW JUMPING INTO SATURDAY, I KNOW FRIDAY IS GOING TO BE A VERY NICE DAY, BUT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT SATURDAY REAL QUICK BECAUSE WE’RE NOT COMPLETELY DONE WITH THE STORM CHANCES POSSIBILITY IN THE MORNING, BUT THE BEST CHANCE FOR AREAS SOUTH OF I-80 FOR THE AFTERNOON INTO THE EVENING, AND THAT CAN BRING ANOTHER ROUND OF SOME STRONGER STORMS AT TWO OUT OF FIVE. CHANCE FOR SEVERE WEATHER OUT THAT WAY FOR AREAS FOR IN SOUTHERN IOWA FOR SATURDAY AFTERNOON TO EVENING TIME. HAIL. STRONG WINDS SEEM TO BE THE LIKELY CULPRITS FOR THOSE STORMS, BUT IT IS STILL GOING TO BE A COUPLE DAYS AWAY. TODAY IS A WEATHER ALERT DAY WITH THESE STRONGER STORMS STRONGEST IN THE MORNING. AND THEN AS WE GO INTO THE AFTERNOON, INTO THE EVENING, STILL SOME LINGERING CHANCES FOR SOME SEVERE WEATHER. SO WE STILL GOT TO BE WEATHER AWARE AS WE GO INTO THE AFTERNOON TODAY, FRIDAY, AGAIN, SUNNY, EVEN HUMIDITY DROPS. IT IS GOING TO BE MUCH NICER OUTSIDE. HIGHS IN THE 80S AS WE STAY DRY. STORM CHANCES RETURN ON SATURDAY, BUT NOW THAT KNOCKS DOWN TEMPERATURES INTO THE 70S FO
