Last summer, Uruguayan striker and agent of chaos Darwin Nuñez departed Liverpool and joined Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League in a deal that saw the Reds paid £45M up front for a highly talented but inconsistent attacker who appeared not to have a future at the club under head coach Arne Slot.
That move didn’t work out the way anyone was likely hoping. Liverpool both missed Darwin’s graft and were also simply short on attacking options throughout the season. Meanwhile, the player failed to settle in Saudi and had his squad registration rescinded in January to make room for Karim Benzema.
As a result, Darwin was able to agree a contract termination with Al Hilal that means he will become a free agent on July 1st. It’s a situation that previously led to some speculation about a possible Liverpool return. That chatter always seemed highly unlikely. Now it turns out that it might actually happen.
According to reports out of Uruguay today, the now 26-year-old striker will play in Liverpool next season and will officially re-join the club he departed just 12 months ago once the World Cup ends. Which means we now have to wait a few weeks where nothing will happen—and everything could change.
Even if the sourcing on the rumour is solid, it’s a situation that has a fair bit of wiggle room built in. Still, when it comes to transfer chatter it’s always worth paying attention to local reports, and if the press in Uruguay are reporting on a return to Liverpool for Darwin it’s a story we have to take seriously.
