Hogwarts Legacy 2 is already one of the most anticipated games in the Wizarding World franchise, but recent details have left fans feeling a bit ambivalent about the open-world RPG. Following the massive success of the original Hogwarts Legacy, which became one of the best-selling games of the 2023, expectations for the sequel are incredibly high.
However, reports suggesting that Hogwarts Legacy 2 could coordinate elements of its story with HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series have sparked concern among parts of the fanbase. Many players praised the original game for telling an original story set more than a century before Harry Potter’s story, allowing it to stand on its own. Further, rumors about potential live-service features have also fueled skepticism, although nothing has been officially confirmed.
That said, there’s another upcoming Harry Potter role-playing game that fans will definitely want to check out, and it may tide them over while they wait for more information on Hogwarts Legacy 2 (via Kickstarter).
Harry Potter fans and Hogwarts Legacy gamers alike are officially counting down the days for Harry Potter: Defenders of Hogwarts, a newly announced tabletop RPG being developed by the very same graphic designers who worked on the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, MinaLima. The new board game was recently revealed on Kickstarter and LaunchOracle, though has yet to go live for backers just yet.
Defenders of Hogwarts is described as “a whole new tabletop adventure set in the wizarding world, [where] the famed school of witchcraft and wizardry has been infiltrated by Death Eaters and Dark Forces. You must make a choice: represent your house and defend your school, or join the Dark Forces to ensure Lord Voldemort’s victory.”
The new board game takes place just before Voldemort invades Hogwarts, and has players “[preparing] for what lies ahead by honing your spell-casting skills, exploring the storied grounds of Hogwarts, and laying the groundwork for a battle between good and evil.” It’s currently listed as “coming soon” to Kickstarter, and interested players can sign up now to be alerted when the project goes live.
The game will support 2-5 players, is intended for ages 13+, and each match is expected to take up to 90 minutes. Further, Defenders of Hogwarts is being “created by the makers of the Acceptance Letter, The Marauder’s Map, The Daily Prophet and more, with game design by multi-award-winning industrial designer David Waterman.”
While there isn’t much more information available on the exciting new tabletop RPG set in the Harry Potter universe, it’s definitely going to be one that Potterheads and Hogwarts Legacy fans will want to keep an eye on in the coming months.
