A news helicopter covering a deadly accident in Los Angeles crashed and caught fire near a storage building in the Chatsworth neighborhood on Tuesday evening. Officials reported that at least three people were killed and a fourth was injured in the incident.
The helicopter, identified as NewsChopper4, was en route to report on a deadly collision between an SUV and a city bus that resulted in two fatalities. The crash occurred approximately one mile away from the bus accident scene.
The Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Branden Silverman stated that one victim was found dead in the parking lot next to the building, but it remains unclear whether the other two deceased were inside the helicopter or on the ground. Emergency teams combed through the wreckage following the crash.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Dozens of firefighters responded quickly to extinguish the flames and secure the crash site. Aerial footage displayed parts of the helicopter’s tail and rotor scattered among storage containers and vehicles.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Helicopters are commonly used in Los Angeles to provide live aerial news coverage due to the city’s size and traffic conditions.
Authorities Continue to Seek Information
As of now, there has been no official confirmation regarding the identities of those aboard the helicopter. NBC reported it has been unable to establish contact with the helicopter crew members following the accident.
The circumstances surrounding the helicopter’s final moments remain unclear, and investigators are working to establish how many people were inside the aircraft at the time of the crash.
