The North Carolina baseball team has a significant challenge to overcome if they want to make another College World Series appearance.
UNC will have to come back from losing the first game of its Super Regional as USC rallied past the Tar Heels to take Game 1. The Trojans overcame a 5-1 deficit and scored eight unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings in a 9-5 win.
Dean Carpentier hit a grand slam to put the Trojans ahead for keeps at 6-5 in the sixth inning.
Game 2 is Saturday afternoon.
UNC carries the homefield advantage with all three potential games coming at Boshamer Stadium.
UNC (48-11-1, 22-8 ACC) swept through the regional last weekend, beating VCU in the opener and East Carolina twice. The Tar Heels are the No. 5 seed nationally and reached the ACC championship game, falling to Georgia Tech.
USC (47-16, 20-10 Big Ten) won the College Station Regional by taking four straight games and outscoring their opponents 55-14 after losing the opener to Texas State.
It’s the first time the teams have met since 2012.
The Tar Heels last reached the CWS in 2024, when they were eliminated by Florida State. That was the program’s 12th CWS appearance.
USC hasn’t reached the CWS since 2001.
