LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. — Omelette, a beagle rescued from Ridglan Farms, was found dead in Florida Tuesday morning after a suspected alligator attack.
According to Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Loxahatchee, Omelette escaped through his owner’s fence on Sunday evening and a search began immediately. Between social media posts, missing pet platform posts, a search team and even a humane trap, the search was extensive.
Unfortunately, Omelette was later found in a nearby canal. Big Dog Ranch Rescue said in a Facebook post that he was likely attacked and killed by an alligator.
“This is not the update we prayed for. It is not the outcome we searched for. It is not the ending that Omelette deserved,” Big Dog said in a Facebook post. “Our entire team is devastated. We know so many of you have been following Omelette’s story, searching for updates, hoping for good news, and we are so deeply sorry that this is not the outcome anyone wanted.”
Big Dog provides adopters with multiple resources for the wellbeing of these dogs. While Omelette was given a Fi GPS tracking collar, his owner did not activate it before his escape. From now on, adopters will not be able to leave with their dog until the GPS tracking system is fully functioning, Big Dog said.
Big Dog said they are devastated Omelette’s story ended this way after surviving a life of animal testing.
“Omelette was more than just a rescue dog,” Big Dog said. “He was one of ours. He was part of the Big Dog Ranch Rescue family, and he was loved by so many people.”
Omelette was one of the hundreds of beagles transferred away from Town of Blue Mounds-based facility Ridglan Farms earlier this year. The facility has been the subject of animal cruelty allegations for multiple years.
Big Dog was one of the groups that organized the purchase of beagles from Ridglan Farms and is working to find homes for the dogs.
