Apple hasn’t officially announced a new Apple TV 4K yet, but it is gearing up for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC26), where it’s expected to unveil its latest software initiatives, including its long-awaited AI-powered revamp of Siri and new operating system updates such as tvOS 27, iOS 27, and macOS 27.

While WWDC doesn’t kick off until June 8, Apple has already offered a preview of some of the new accessibility features it’s been working on. One of those is a new Apple TV display feature called Larger Text, which is designed to make on-screen text much easier to read.

Not quite. The first Apple TV was announced in January 2007 and started shipping in March 2007. Steve Jobs introduced it at Macworld, describing it as a way to bring your iTunes library to your television.

What was the storage capacity of the original first-generation Apple TV at launch?

Correct! The original Apple TV launched with either a 40GB or 160GB hard drive, as it was designed to store synced media locally from your iTunes library. This was before streaming became the dominant model.

Not quite. The first Apple TV came with either a 40GB or 160GB internal hard drive. Because it was designed to sync content from iTunes rather than purely stream it, local storage was a key part of the original design.

What major redesign did Apple TV receive in 2010 that dramatically changed its form factor?

Correct! The second-generation Apple TV launched in 2010 was a dramatic departure — it shrunk to a tiny black puck and completely removed the internal hard drive, shifting fully to streaming. It also dropped the price to just $99.

Not quite. The 2010 Apple TV (2nd generation) was reimagined as a tiny black puck-shaped device that removed local storage entirely, relying on streaming instead. Steve Jobs famously called the original a ‘hobby’ before this pivotal redesign.

What is the name of the operating system that runs on Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K?

Correct! tvOS is Apple’s dedicated operating system for the Apple TV platform, first introduced alongside the fourth-generation Apple TV in 2015. It’s based on iOS but optimised for the living room experience.

Not quite. Apple TV runs tvOS, a purpose-built operating system Apple introduced with the fourth-generation Apple TV in 2015. While it shares a foundation with iOS, tvOS is specifically tailored for big-screen, remote-controlled navigation.

Not quite. The 2022 Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) uses the A15 Bionic chip. Apple often reuses chips from its iPhone lineup in Apple TV, and the A15 offered a meaningful performance improvement over the A12 found in the previous model.

Apple TV+ launched as a streaming service in November 2019. What was notable about its launch pricing in many markets?

Correct! Apple TV+ launched on 1 November 2019 at just $4.99 per month, making it one of the most affordable streaming services at launch. Crucially, Apple also offered a free one-year subscription to anyone who purchased a new Apple device.

Not quite. Apple TV+ launched at $4.99 per month and sweetened the deal by offering a free year of the service to anyone buying a new Apple device. The aggressive pricing was seen as Apple’s strategy to rapidly build a subscriber base for its fledgling original content library.

Larger Text makes a huge difference

The feature is expected to arrive with tvOS 27

As the name suggests, Larger Text lets you increase the size of the text on your Apple TV, making it much easier to read. For users with low vision, or for anyone who sits farther from their TV, it’s a feature that can make a noticeable difference.

Apple has already shown off the feature in action, and it includes multiple text size options to choose from. As you can also see in the comparison image below, the difference is quite dramatic. The default Apple TV text size is fairly small, but increasing it with Larger Text makes menus and on-screen information significantly easier to read.

There is one major caveat, though: Larger Text only works with apps that support Apple’s Dynamic Type text framework. That means it will work throughout the tvOS interface and in Apple’s own apps, such as Apple TV, but not necessarily in every streaming app you download. For example, Netflix and Prime Video use their own proprietary tech for text, so this feature likely won’t have any effect there.

If you’re eager to try Larger Text, you’ll unfortunately need to wait, as Apple has only said it’s “coming to tvOS” and hasn’t provided an exact release date. However, with tvOS 27 expected to be unveiled at WWDC, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s included in that update, which is widely expected to roll out to Apple TV devices this fall.

A new Apple TV 4K might be coming soon

The wait is almost over, fingers crossed

Hopefully, another thing we’ll finally see from Apple this fall is a new Apple TV 4K. Apple released the current third-gen Apple TV 4K back in 2022, and rumors of a successor with an upgraded chipset (possibly the A17 Pro) have been circulating for quite some time.

Recently, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple has a new Apple TV set-top box “nearly ready to go,” with the main holdup reportedly being Siri. According to Gurman, Apple wants to launch the next Apple TV 4K alongside its revamped Siri experience and new Apple Intelligence features.

With that in mind, Apple is widely expected to roll out its upgraded Siri this fall as part of iOS 27. If that happens, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a new Apple TV 4K arrive around the same time or sometime afterward, potentially in late September or October.

As for Apple’s new Larger Text feature for Apple TV, it’s a long-overdue addition, and I’m excited to test it. I tend to sit farther back from my TV, so I’ll definitely use it to make the screen easier to read.
