Second-round competition at the U.S. Open wraps up on Thursday, when Lorenzo Musetti and Gabriel Diallo are among those taking the court. Musetti meets David Goffin, while it’s a New York rematch for Diallo against Jaume Munar.
(10) Lorenzo Musetti vs. David Goffin
Musetti and Goffin will be squaring off for the fifth time in their careers and for the second time at the U.S. Open when they collide in round two on Thursday. Their previous Flushing Meadows showdown was an absolute thriller, won by Musetti 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(11-9) in the first round three years ago. He leads the overall head-to-head series 3-1, although Goffin prevailed in their most recent encounter via a 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-2 decision at last fall’s Shanghai Masters.
When healthy, Musetti is without question one of the best players in the world. The 23-year-old Italian, who comes in at 10th in the rankings, reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2024 and the French Open semis in 2025. He is sporting a 27-12 record this season after taking down Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in four sets on Tuesday. Goffin is seemingly running out of steam at 34 years old and a ranking of No. 80, as he has won only nine of 25 matches on the main tour in 2025. The Belgian did well to beat Quentin Halys 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 in round one, but Musetti is an entirely different kind of opponent. This should be straightforward for the favorite.

(31) Gabriel Diallo vs. Jaume Munar
You have to like Diallo’s chances in New York, not only to win on Thursday but also to potentially make a deep run–especially now that Jack Draper has vacated his section of the draw. The 23-year-old played great at this tournament last summer, qualifying for the main draw eventually losing in the third round to Tommy Paul in a fourth-set tiebreaker. Diallo is even better 12 months later, climbing to No. 33 in the world.
Up next for him is Munar, who is 0-2 in the head-to-head series and lost to Diallo in the U.S. Open first round last summer (6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5). The Canadian also prevailed 7-5, 6-3 a couple of months ago on the grass courts of Mallorca. Both guys are coming off four-setters in the opening round. Diallo ousted Damir Dzumhur; Munar took care of lucky loser Jaime Faria. Munar has played well this year, but nothing suggests that he will turn the tide against Diallo and beat such a big hitter on a fast hard court.
