Magic coach on hot seat as new candidate from college emerges

With Jamahl Mosley poised to be fired, Michigan head coach Dusty May rises as a new name linked to Orlando.

The Orlando Magic fell miserably this NBA postseason, committing a choke job by blowing their 3-1 series lead in the opening round against the Detroit Pistons.

The franchise has endured its third straight first-round exit, much to Paolo Banchero’s sheer frustration.

As the Magic’s roller-coaster season ends in disappointment, Jamahl Mosley finds himself on the coaching hot seat within the team and will be primarily identified as the one to blame for Orlando’s collapse.

Should the Magic sack Mosley, Michigan head coach Dusty May stands as a name to watch across Orlando, per Marc Stein. But the possibility of hiring May remains unlikely, considering that he just led the Wolverines in this year’s NCAA title.

“League sources say that the Magic are admirers of Michigan’s Dusty May and would have a level of interest if he were indeed available,” the NBA insider wrote. “It must be noted that the expectation at this point in the college game is that May will stay with the Wolverines after they beat UConn for the national championship. Does May, however, indeed have NBA aspirations?”

The 49-year-old May previously served as an assistant for Florida from 2015 to 2018 before ultimately leaving to become Florida Atlantic’s basketball coach. Under his lead, the Owls made it to the Final Four in 2023.

Billy Donovan, who recently stepped down from his head coaching post in the Chicago Bulls, previously emerged as a prominent candidate who could replace Mosley in Orlando.
