Two Kentucky Lottery players experienced holiday joy, each winning $50,000 on scratch-off tickets, highlighting unexpected luck and community generosity.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two Kentucky Lottery players got some holiday joy after purchasing scratch-off tickets.
The lottery says Chris Hurley of Pikeville, Kentucky had carried a Millionaire Club scratch-off ticket for two days before realizing he had a winning ticket.
He told officials he was a regular lottery player and decided to buy “just one more ticket” after being nudged by a store manager – it was something Hurley said he couldn’t ignore.
“I actually walked out to the truck and turned around and went back,” Hurley said. “And I only bought one.”
Hurley said he scratched the ticket while on the way to work thinking he’d won just $500.
“I kept scratching and realized it was much more. I couldn’t believe it,” he said.
He ended up winning $50,000, taking $36,000 after taxes.
Hurley and his wife said they wanted to help others including their church’s ministry and community outreach programs saying, “blessings are meant to be shared.”
Food City sold the winning ticket, and they will receive $500.
The next day, a Pulaski County man arrived at Kentucky Lottery headquarters with a $50 Instant Millionaire ticket worth $50,000.
Richard Coleman turned an ordinary stop for gas in Somerset into an unforgettable moment.
He stopped at the Southern Express where he purchased the last ticket on the roll – something he says has brought him luck before.
Coleman says he plays the lottery for enjoyment.
Scratching the ticket and matching the number 43, Coleman confirmed his win using the Kentucky Lottery app on his son-in-law’s phone.
The app had displayed the big prize with news spreading quickly between his family and friends.
“I was absolutely astounded,” he said.
Coleman also received a check for $36,000 after taxes and took his winnings straight to the bank.
“Next time you see me, it’ll be for that $3 million,” the winner joked, referencing the game’s top prize.
The Kentucky Lottery said in 2025, they have paid out more than $1.6 billion in prizes.
