Funeral arrangements announced for longtime Charlotte Motor Speedway president

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Funeral arrangements were announced for longtime Charlotte Motor Speedway president and general manager H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler.

Wheeler, nicknamed “the P.T. Barnum of motorsports,” was hired by Speedway Motorsports in 1975 and oversaw the speedway until he retired in 2008. He died of natural causes on Aug. 21. He was 86.

A vigil, rosary and eulogy will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, at Saint Gabriel Catholic Church on 3016 Providence Road in Charlotte.

A funeral mass and reception will start at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26, also at the church. A reception will follow at The Speedway Club at Charlotte Motor Speedway, 5555 Concord Parkway South in Concord.

In lieu of flowers, Wheeler’s family asked that donations be made to the Belmont Abbey College Motorsports Management program, which he helped launch more than 20 years ago.
