A brush fire sparked in the Sorrento Valley area Monday morning and grew up to 40 acres within an hour, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.

The fire sparked around 9:30 a.m. near the Interstate 5/I-805 split and quickly grew to several acres with a moderate to dangerous rate of spread, according to firefighter communications reported by the citizen fire reporting app, Watch Duty. Around 10:15 a.m., the fire was estimated to be 30-40 acres.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire and if there was any damage or injuries.

A spokesperson with San Diego Fire-Rescue said evacuations were occurring in the area. A temporary evacuation site was established at 4275 East Gate Mall, according to firefighting communications.

At least two firefighting helicopters and several engines were initially requested to tackle the fire before a full aircraft response and about a dozen more engines were requested, Watch Duty reported. Crews were working to protect structures.
