No. 16 WVU Men’s Soccer Head Coach Dan Stratford and senior forward Marcus Caldeira spoke to the media following a 4-0 victory over La Salle University Monday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Caldeira notched his 30th and 31st career goals for WVU in the game, including an eighth-minute free-kick goal to open scoring.
Caldeira said it felt “amazing.”
“I was on my 29[th goal], so I knew that coming into this game,” Caldeira said. “If I scored one, I knew the three-zero celebration was gonna come out.”
Stratford said Caldeira is “enjoying himself.”
“Marcus just looks like he’s enjoying himself,” Stratford said. … “He’s kept things relatively simple.”.
WVU scored two goals off set pieces on Monday. Stratford said it was something the team focused on going into the game.
“Set pieces were an area of emphasis following the Manhattan [University] game,” Stratford said. “We actually spoke a lot about Arsenal’s success in the Premier League [on set pieces].”
Stratford enjoyed the performance and believes the team improved from its game against Manhattan.
“It was some small details we needed to clean up. The only moment they fell short was just when we got a little bit too excited or tried something a little bit beyond what was necessary in the moment. …The details of where the game was played, the space and attention to controlling space were much, much better than what we saw on Thursday,” Stratford said.
WVU Men’s Soccer travels to FirstEnergy Stadium in Akron, Ohio, to take on the University of Akron Zips at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
