It’s all over on Court No. 1, where Jannik Sinner has beaten Jan-Lennard Struff 7-5, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
I said to Matt Futterman at lunch I thought par for Struff would be losing in straight sets by scorelines of 7-6, 6-4 and 6-3, so he’s managed one game more. And that maybe doesn’t reflect how close he pushed Sinner in the second, even earning a set point.
Sinner marches on to a semifinal against Novak Djokovic or Félix Auger-Aliassime, even if he’s still playing a little way off his imperious best.
One bit of context as well is that the Italian’s five opponents so far have had an average ranking of No. 80, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens when the quality of opposition goes up by several levels.
