Portugal’s legendary defender Pepe was not playing for the side during its FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K match against DR Congo in Houston on Wednesday.

He could be seen cheering for the side from the stands along with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The former Real Madrid player had retired from international football following the Euro 2024 campaign where Portugal lost to France in the quarterfinals.

He also called it a day from club football at the same time. He is reportedly about to make the switch to coaching by joining Jose Mourinho’s staff at Real Madrid.

Pepe made 141 appearances for his country, winning the Euro 2016. He spent 10 seasons with Los Blancos, where he won three La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies, as well as two Club World Cups.
