Drivers can expect to see more relief at the pump this week due as the national average for gasoline continues on a three-week slide. The downward trend is coinciding with the news of a breakthrough agreement between the U.S. and Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for the movement of oil through the Middle East.
According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular gas is $4.07, down 9 cents from last Monday.
The average price of gas in New York State is now $4.36 per gallon, also down 9 cents from last week.
AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:
- Batavia – $4.34 (down 7 cents from last Monday)
- Buffalo – $4.45 (down 6 cents from last Monday)
- Elmira – $4.21 (down 13 cents from last Monday)
- Ithaca – $4.50 (down 6 cents from last Monday)
- Rochester – $4.45 (down 5 cents from last Monday)
- Rome – $4.42 (down 6 cents from last Monday)
- Syracuse – $4.44 (down 6 cents from last Monday)
- Watertown – $4.41 (down 5 cents from last Monday)
Drivers will take all the relief they can get as they look forward to summer road trips. But even with the Strait expected to reopen soon, AAA says it could still take months to get back to normal. That unknown means oil prices may not stabilize right away.
To conserve fuel, AAA recommends for motorists to map routes, avoid peak traffic times, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control where possible.
