Ames basketball legend Harrison Barnes shares thoughts heading into third NBA Finals

THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. THAT’S THROUGH JUNE OF 2031. AMES HIGH GRAD HARRISON BARNES IS WRAPPING UP HIS 14TH NBA SEASON. THE SPURS FORWARD HAS ALREADY WON A CHAMPIONSHIP WITH GOLDEN STATE, BUT HE HASN’T BEEN BACK TO THE FINALS IN A DECADE. AND TONIGHT HE’LL GET ANOTHER CHANCE WITH GAME ONE. OH MY GOSH, IT’S SO COOL. ONLY ON KCCI SPORTS DIRECTOR SCOTT REISTER TALKED TO BARNES YESTERDAY AND ASKED IF HE THOUGHT HE’D HAVE A SHOT AT ANOTHER RING AT AGE 34. I DID NOT. I’M NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO, YOU KNOW, WAS LIKE. I HAD UNWAVERING DOUBT THAT, YOU KNOW, THAT I WAS GOING TO BE IN THIS POSITION. LIKE I, I HAD I DID NOT KNOW, YOU KNOW, AND I THERE WAS A LOT OF YEARS WHERE WE WERE MISSING THE PLAYOFFS TO BE HERE THIS YEAR WHERE WE’RE IN THE NBA FINALS. RIGHT. IT’S A VERY UNIQUE AND SPECIAL SITUATION. THIS IS YEAR 14 FOR YOU. WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR LONGEVITY TO? HAVING A VILLAGE AND JUST, I THINK DAY TO DAY. DAY TO DAY WORK AND COMMITMENT. YOU KNOW, OBVIOUSLY IT STARTS IT STARTS WITH MY, MY FAITH, BUT ALSO JUST, YOU KNOW, MY WIFE, MY WIFE, BRITTANY, BEING ABLE TO JUST BE, YOU KNOW, A ROCK AND CONSISTENT FOR ME. HOW MUCH LONGER DO YOU WANT TO PLAY UNTIL THE WHEELS FALL OFF? NO NO NO NO. I MEAN, YOUR BODY WILL TELL YOU WHEN, BUT YOU’RE NOT THERE YET. YOU WANT TO KEEP GOING AFTER THIS YEAR? HEY, MAN, I’M 34. I FEEL YOUNG, I FEEL YOUNG. GET UP AND MOVE. SO I FEEL GOOD. I FEEL LIKE I STILL HAVE PLENTY IN THE TANK. YOU’RE THE MAN. AND WE’RE REMINDED OF EVERY TIME WE GO INTO THE HARRISON BARNES GYMNASIUM IN AMES. TO BE ABLE TO BE SUCH A FIXTURE IN THE COMMUNITY. HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT TO YOU AND THE LEGACY YOU WANT TO LEAVE? IF IT WASN’T FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO TOOK ME TO THE GYM, REBOUNDED FROM IMPORTANT TO ME, HELPED ME WITH SCHOOL, ALL THE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT I HAD IN AND AROUND THE COMMUNITY GROWING UP IN AND AROUND THE STATE OF IOWA GROWING UP, I WOULDN’T BE IN THIS POSITION NOW. I TRULY DO BELIEVE THAT. ONE AMES AND THE STATE OF IOWA ARE SPECIAL PLACES, BUT TO TO BE ABLE TO GIVE OTHER PEOPLE THAT OPPORTUNITY IS HUGE. BY THE WAY, HARRISON, 34, IS YOUNG. YES. IT IS YOUNG. SO GLAD YOU FEEL YOUNG. SO GAME ONE OF THE NBA FINALS STARTS TONIGHT IN SAN ANTONIO. I REMEMBER. THAT’S RIGHT. TH
